Today I met a Greek ultrarunner … in Greece, no less!

2020-08-15 By AlexaLeave a comment

Today I met a Greek ultrarunner. Coming down a dirt fire road, I was approaching the back side of the low mountain I had walked to the top of the previous evening after arriving inRead More

On my 50th birthday I find myself flying to Greece … and so I visit the Acropolis

2020-08-13 By AlexaLeave a comment

When I entered the country on 17 June, Serbia was doing really well, but shortly before I arrived the government had relaxed controls and the Covid-19 infection numbers started rising again. I was worried notRead More

I experience Serbian hospitality on my training run

2020-07-05 By Alexa3 Comments

As I approached the three cottages strung in a row along the dirt vehicle track at around 1050 metres above sea level, 7 km into my run, my body’s yearning for caffeine took over myRead More

On self-reliance (and a mini-rant)

2020-06-21 By AlexaLeave a comment

For the first time in seven months I am fully alone. The owner of this apartment lives three-plus hours away in Kraljevo, I know no one here, and I am in a sparsely populated neighbourhoodRead More

The reality of life on the move: Choosing the next ‘home’

2019-05-14 By AlexaLeave a comment

There are two main layers, so to speak, to how I choose where to go. The first is practical: 1a. Which country: in or out of the Schengen area? a country I feel at homeRead More

Raška

2018-06-13 By AlexaLeave a comment

Downtown Raška was bustling. I hadn’t expected this. I had become so accustomed to the quietness of life atop Kopaonik in the un-season — post ski season and pre summer — this sudden flush ofRead More

I opened my eyes. Often when you wake for the first time in a new place, it takes a few moments before the brain figures out where you are. Not this morning. The instant IRead More

No more will I estivate

2016-01-23 By AlexaLeave a comment

As I explained to my father and brother and sister-in-law and my oldest nephew (the only one of the four who’d stuck around for our family video call) last February, it was as if IRead More

Which city are you going to live in?

2016-01-23 By AlexaLeave a comment

Italian is like English with prepositions: appartamento in affitto, flat for rent, but German dispenses with the preposition and efficiently squishes together the nouns: Mietwohnung. “Oh, how nice,” my landlord says when I tell himRead More

So, where did I want to live?

2015-01-31 By AlexaLeave a comment

Italy came the answer from a part of me that hadn’t spoken up in twenty years. Where in Italy? I asked. Northern Italy. In the mountains. Barely able to suppress the thrill of energy thatRead More

The beginning (where to begin)

2015-01-31 By Alexa2 Comments

The weather app on my phone told me it was 80°F (27°C), a typical temperature for an early summer’s day. Upstairs in my small apartment on the rural outskirts of Healdsburg, California, I was sittingRead More

About This Site

On 8 March 2016 I left settled normalcy and embarked on a life on the move. Here on these electronic pages are recounted the challenges, joys, beauty, pain, adventures, love and ordinarinesses experienced on my journey within Eurasia and within myself as I live this itinerant life and train for running and climbing in the mountains.

This blog tells that story through photo galleries, prose poems, journal excerpts and narrative. Each post is dated for when it took place, so new posts will show up at the appropriate spot in the timeline, and as the months (and years) go by, the story will be filled in and fleshed out. Right now all my journals except the current one are in a place where I’m not, so when I get back to them (October, if all goes well), I’ll be able to start filling in more of the story from 2015 to 2019. I hope you enjoy exploring. I’d love to hear from you.

Ps. The header is randomised, so if you keep hitting refresh, you’ll see different photos from the places I’ve been. There are almost a hundred photos and I’m adding more all the time, so have fun!
